A platoon is a military unit typically composed of two to four squads, sections, or patrols. Platoon organization varies depending on the country and the branch, but a platoon can be composed of 20–50 troops, [1] although specific platoons may range from 10 [2] to 100 people. [3]

Platoon. A platoon is a part of an infantry company and is further divided into three or four sections. A British platoon usually consists of 25 to 30 soldiers. Platoons are commanded by a lieutenant or second lieutenant.
Major Units are regiment or battalion-sized with minor units being smaller, either company sized sub-units or platoons. All units within the service are either Regular or Army Reserve, or a combination with sub-units of each type.
- TEAM. Four soldiers make up a team — a noncommissioned officer and three junior enlisted soldiers. Teams with special functions may also include officers or warrant officers.
- SQUAD. Commanded By: Staff Sergeant. Also referred to as a SECTION. Two teams make up a squad, which has four to 10 soldiers. In an infantry squad, the teams divide duties: one serves as a base-of-fire element, while the other serves as the maneuver element.
- PLATOON. Commanded By: Lieutenant. 2-3 squads. A platoon consists of a few squads and up to a few dozen soldiers. They’re generally run by a lieutenant, often with a noncommissioned officer as second in command.
- COMPANY. Commanded By: Captain. 3-4 platoons. A company has anywhere from a few dozen to 200 soldiers. It’s a tactical-sized unit that can perform a battlefield function on its own.
They normally command a platoon or troop of around 30 soldiers, with increased responsibilities from being a Second Lieutenant. They also have the opportunity to gain specialised skills outside their corps or regiment.
Three or four squads make up a platoon, which has 20 to 50 soldiers and is commanded by a lieutenant. Two or more platoons make up a company, which has 100 to 250 soldiers and is commanded by a captain or a major.
