Roy Reid, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and diabetes for some time, succumbed to illness on the morning of January 10, 2009 at his home in the Olympic Gardens area. Reid’s use of colour strong, sometimes contrasting, colour in his works, often depicted as flat solid hues.

Roy Reid was born in Portland, Jamaica in 1937. The son of farmers, he left school aged 11 unable to read. He moved to Kingston to start a career in art, and was closely associated with Jamaica’s Intuitives because of his self-taught background.

Popular intuitive Jamaican artist Roy Reid died at his home in Kingston on Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer. The self-taught, grassroots or folk artist was 72. Born in Portland to farming parents, Reid attended Seaside Primary School but left illiterate at age 11.
