As such, it forms the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau and stands as one of the most impressive overlooks in the Grand Canyon State.

From Payson I drove east on SR 260, climbing through Star Valley, past Kohl’s Ranch and the turnoff for idyllic little Christopher Creek. After about 29 miles, SR 260 tops out on the Rim. On the right side of the highway sits the Mogollon Visitor Center, a small wooden cabin. It was closed during my visit but is scheduled to open for the season on ...
After leaving Willow Springs Lake, I turn onto FR 300. Almost immediately a couple of signed pullouts beckon. Military Sinkhole and Rim Lakes Vistas are big ledged protrusions from the cliff top with panoramas that seem to stretch forever. These views are different than summit views. It’s not just that you’re above the landscape. You’re also at the...
Back on FR 300, I bid adios to the pavement. It’s dirt road for the next 40 or so miles, a bit bouncy at times but can be managed in a cautiously driven sedan. I’m chasing history through here. This is part of the old wagon road built by Gen. George Crook to move troops and supplies between military posts in the 1870s as the U.S. Army battled the A...

From Payson, go east on State Route 260 for about 29 miles to the top of the Mogollon Rim. The Mogollon Visitor Center is on the right. Opposite it, turn left onto Forest Road 300. Or, if you’d like to visit Willow Springs Lake first, continue for another mile on 260. Most of FR 300 is well-graded dirt suitable for sedans, but you may be more comfo...

Check out this 43.3-mile point-to-point trail near Pine, Arizona. Generally considered an easy route. This is a popular trail for scenic driving, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are May through October.
If you are driving up, or down 260 northeast of Payson, you must take rim road, the last road before the decline of the highway. Go to the west, not to the east where the ranger buildings are. Drive about 2 miles, and on the left is the best view of the valley below the rim.
