- Rock climbing gear for beginners. Whether you’re starting with sport climbing or trad climbing, indoor or outdoor, you’ll need the following items just to get started.
- Climbing harness. Unless you’re going bouldering, you’ll need a climbing harness. A rock climbing harness goes around your waist and thighs and allows you to attach to the rope for both safe climbing and rappelling and to belay your partner.
- Belay device. The chances are, in the beginning, you’ll be climbing with a partner. When you’re rappelling back down the rock after a climb, you’ll feed the rope through your belay device, and when it’s your turn to stay on the ground and belay your partner as they climb, you’ll feed the rope through it when it is attached to your harness.
- Locking carabiner. To attach your belay device to your harness, you’ll need a locking carabiner and you’ll probably want a second one to attach your chalk bag too.
Mountain climbing can be an exhilarating and challenging experience, but it’s important to have the right equipment to ensure your safety and success. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, this equipment list will help you prepare for your next mountain climbing adventure.

Climbing ropes are the single mostimportant piece of rock climbing equipment. There are only a couple ofinstances in which a climber wouldn’t need them: 1. when they’re bouldering—typically climbing no more than 15ft, with a crashmat underneath for safety 2. when they’re free soloing, which only a fraction of climbers worldwide even pursue Ropes ar...
If you’ve bought a suitable climbingrope, you’ll need an appropriate safety harness to attach it to. There are twoprimary considerations here: 1. how much you want to spend 2. what type of climbing you intend to do Whether you’re into trad, sport, winter, or indoor climbing, versatility and comfort should be your primaryfocus if you want a catch-all...
If they don’t own one already, abelay device is one of the first pieces of rock climbing hardware a trad orsport climber will buy when planning a climb. If you haven’t heard of a belaydevice before, it’s a mechanical friction brake used to protect climbers fromfalls or lower them from an ascent. A carabiner is essentially the namefor a ‘climbing clip’. In simple terms, it’s a device to which you can attachthings without fear of them becoming detached. So, in climbing, they’re used for allsorts of purposes, such as connecting climbing rope with other pieces ofclimbing protection such as nuts, camming devices, and bolts. They’re usually made...
We did say carabiners are used forall sorts of things in rock climbing—one of these is the quickdraw. It’s madefrom two carabiners connected by a textile sling. The idea is to attach one end of thequickdraw carabiner to a bolt hanger on a route and your rope to the other. This gives you some slack on the rope by allowing the rope to move around whil...
Climbing cams—or spring-loadedcamming devices (SLCDs)—fit into cracks and gaps in rocks where they’ll grip toprovide protection. Cams are particularly useful in tradclimbing where a nut or bolt won’t work. With that in mind, cams offer a littlemore flexibility in the route you can take up a rock face, and they’recommonplace in every outdoor rock cl...
Unfortunately, rock faces andmountains occasionally have a habit of spontaneously fracturing, sendingstones, rocks, and sometimes boulders tumbling down below. This is a hazard for any climber, which is why the helmet is another key piece of rock climbing equipment. You’ll most commonly need a helmetfor mountaineering, trad climbing, and sport climb...
Stepping foot on a wall withoutclimbing shoes is unheard of. They are as closely related to climbing as theracket is to tennis. In short, there is no rock climbing without them. Climbing shoes are characterised bytheir tight fit, thin material, rubber sole and outer edges. These design features all cometogether to give your foot the best grip on th...
Chalk bags are a prettystraightforward bit of kit. They’re typically a small canvas or synthetic bagdesigned with an opening to comfortably fit your whole hand, though some arelarge enough to fit both. They also come with a side-releasebuckle and a loop of fabric so that you can attach them to your harness orpants. There are endless options on them...
Now you have the chalk bag, you’regoing to need some chalk. As with climbing shoes, it’sunthinkable for rock climbers to climb without chalk. As with the chalk powerliftersand gymnasts use, chalk is usedin climbing to increase grip and friction on the surface of your hand by dryingsweat and other moisture. It’s not hard to see why theincreased grip...
