Feb 19, 2024 · Baby foxes are called pups, kits or cubs and when they’re first born, they are tiny! They weigh about ¼-pound and are approximately 4 inches long, covered in short black fur. They’re also completely helpless. At this stage, a baby fox can’t even open its eyes.
If you find a baby fox, it might not have been abandoned. In the spring, it's normal to see month-old cubs developing their survival skills above ground during the day. Their parents are usually nearby, watching. Parent foxes are unlikely to approach the cubs if people are around.
Four fox cubs await the return of a parent, they hope with food for the growing brood. Cubs are suckled for around 4 weeks and progressively weaned thereafter. Some are fully weaned by around 6 - 7 weeks of age, whilst others may still be suckling well beyond this stage.
