Jun 17, 2015 · The renowned Southern nationalist, Edmund Ruffin, was 67-years-old when he travelled to South Carolina and fired a cannon during the opening attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861. He was also present at the battles of First Manassas and Seven Pines before poor health confined him to home for the remainder of the Civil War.
Jan 29, 2019 · In 1861, Ruffin’s Civil War prophecy became reality, and he traveled to the scene of action in South Carolina to stare at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor and live his imagined future. It was the most gratifying experience of his life.
Federal and Confederate troops plundered several of Ruffin’s properties during the war. His plantation on Coggin’s Point was the scene of the Beefsteak Raid during the Siege of Petersburg. By 1865, Ruffin had endured the premature death of his wife and eight of his children.

Ruffin was present at Charleston Harbor when South Carolina forces initiated the bombardment of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, where the then sixty-seven-year-old Virginian claimed to have fired the first shot.
