Plot summary. Teenager Barbara Vining (Glynis Johns) has an unrequited crush on her Latin-language teacher, Stephen Barlow (Leo Genn) and goes to his house for private tutoring. Barlow's wife Kay (Gene Tierney) notices Barbara's infatuation and cruelly confronts her. Barbara, who is humiliated, runs out of their house.

Teenage girl (Johns) becomes infatuated with teacher (Genn) in small English town. When girl disappears, teacher is suspect, and hunt begins for the girl. Despite lack of evidence, teacher is accused of many lurid crimes, and his marriage and career nearly ruined until girl returns three days later and clears him.
When Barbara disappears after meeting with him late one night, jaws start flapping, the police begin an investigation, and the girl's father (Walter Fitzgerald) suspects foul play. Beautifully shot by Reginald Wyer, Personal Affair also benefits from superb supporting performances from Megs Jenkins and Pamela Brown as Barbara's mother and aunt.
