Oct 10, 2009 · David Hare (b. 1947) has had three distinct phases to his career as a playwright. In the 1970s he was a satirist of the agitprop movement whose plays (Slag, Knuckle) smacked of youthful belligerence.
The film focuses on a romance in the 1950s between a teenaged boy and an older woman who is later discovered to have been a Nazi guard and is on trial for committing war crimes during the Holocaust. The film was well reviewed and earned Hare his second Academy Award nomination.
Hare's plays naturally offer a portrait of his own divided temperament in which the romantic and the rebel are often at war. But collectively they also provide an authentic and remarkably well-sustained picture of the convulsions that have taken place in British life over the past half-century.
