Prek Sbauv ( Khmer: ព្រែកស្បូវ pronounced [prɛːk.ˈsɓəw]) is a small fishing village alongside the Sen River in north-eastern Cambodia. Known as the birthplace of Pol Pot, notorious leader of the Khmer Rouge, [ 1][ 2] Prek Sbauv has no more than ten houses, and is located in Kampong Thom Province.
Born to a prosperous farmer in Prek Sbauv, French Cambodia, Pol Pot was educated at some of Cambodia's most elite schools. Arriving in Paris in October 1949 on an academic scholarship, he later joined the French Communist Party in 1951 while studying at École française de radioélectricité.
