Music can be described in terms of many genres and styles. Classifications are often arbitrary, and may be disputed and closely related forms often overlap. Larger genres and styles comprise more specific sub-categories.
- Rock. The Beatles are largely considered the most popular rock band of all time. And while there are many songs we could choose from, for this list, we chose the highly recognizable and guitar heavy “Day Tripper.”
- Jazz. At the core of genres like blues and rock, you will find jazz. Jazz often features complex chord progressions, sophisticated harmonies, and skilled improvisation.
- Hip Hop / Rap. One of the most popular hip-hop acts of all-time is the ubiquitous Snoop Dogg. And for this list, we’ve chosen to highlight “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” which happens to feature another popular hip-hop artist, Pharrell Williams.
- Pop. Pop isn’t a genre per se, though it is often thought of that way. Pop is just what’s popular right now. In the 60s, rock and psychedelia were all the rage.
