Scholars invested in the interdiscipline of reli- gious and performance studies have begun to re- alize the important influences of belief and praxis on both the world stage and the theatrical stage, and the much-anticipated publication of Religion, Theatre, and Performance: Acts of Faith is at the van- guard of a rapidly growing body of work.
This chapter explores the history of the theatre and drama and its varying relationships with religious belief. It begins in the ancient world where the term ‘liturgy’ had its origins and where one such liturgical act was the staging of drama.
Lance Gharavi’s edited collection Religion, Theatre, and Performance: Acts of Faith, featuring an impressive list of contributors, appeared in 2012, issuing a clear call for degree programs in theatre and performance studies “to take religion and spirituality into account” (2012a, 5).
