Critical reaction toward the movie was divided once it premiered. In its favor, Robert J. Landry of Variety called the film "a big, powerful moving picture demonstrating vast cinematic resource". When they arrive in Gethsemane, Judas kisses Jesus to indicate that he is the man to be arrested. Knowing that Judas has betrayed him, Jesus orders Peter to "put back [his] sword," and goes quietly with the soldiers.
