In 2003, the population voted through a referendum in favour of secession from Guadeloupe to form a separate overseas collectivity ( collectivité d'outre-mer , or COM ) of France.

Voters approved the move in 2003, and the change took place in February 2007. The collectivity, while remaining a part of France, has broad authority over its own fiscal and legislative affairs.
