The protagonist of the series is Alex Cross, an African-American Metropolitan Police Department detective and father who counters threats to his family and to the city of Washington, D.C. Supporting characters include two of Cross's children, Damon, and Janelle, as well as his grandmother Nana Mama.

Dr. Alex Cross is a fictional character and the protagonist of a series of books by novelist James Patterson. He is a doctor and psychologist, yet he is notable for solving murders, kidnappings, government attacks, and many other notorious crimes.
He has such Sherlockian intuition in "Alex Cross" you might almost imagine he read the James Patterson novel the movie is based on — except that the movie isn't based on a Patterson book, just on the character played by Morgan Freeman in "Kiss the Girls" (1997) and "Along Came a Spider" (2001).
