DMO will most likely have a more stringent network for dentists as a tradeoff for better benefits as you can see. PPO gives you more flexibility on who you want to see. Here's a good article on the differences between Dental PPO and DMO .
Dental Maintenance Organizations (DMO) only covers in-network services. Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) and Participating Dental Network (PDN) structures cover in- and out-of-network plans. Delta Dental is the way to go for individual and family plans because of its selection.
A DMO plan only covers diagnostic and preventative care. Any restorative procedures get paid out of pocket. Unfortunately theres also very little incentive for providers to contract at the DMO level as the fee schedules on these plans are often significantly reduced.
In Illinois, the Aetna Dental DMO plan provides limited out-of-network benefits. To receive maximum benefits, members must select and have care coordinated by their PCD. In Illinois, the Aetna Dental DMO plan is not a health maintenance organization (HMO).
