There’s a quiet intensity that runs throughout “The Audition.” Although most of it feels like a subtle family and teacher drama, sharp anxious pangs occasionally disrupt the film’s otherwise gentle pace.
Audition was one of the first Asian movies I watched when I started getting into cinema. I watched a few other Miike films afterwards and didn't get the same kick. Ichi the Killer is just edge overload, where Audition was great because it has so many layers to the production.
The movie is brilliant though. The idea seemed pretty simple (still meaning good) to me (you take advantage of young beautiful women - you have what you deserve in the end), which isn't that common for Japanese horrors usually, so I searched for different interpretations.
