Beginning in 1989, Harris played the title role of a child prodigy doctor in Doogie Howser, M.D., for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. After the show's four-season run ended in 1993, Harris played a number of guest roles on television series, including Murder, She Wrote .
- The Network Hated Harris and the Show. ABC was not pleased with Neil Patrick Harris as the lead, and they also didn't care for the show in general. But producer Steven Bochco didn't really have a choice other than to keep going.
- Toilet Time Brought Us Doogie. Bochco was reading New York magazine while on the toilet when he read an article about child prodigies. “The idea right then and there was, well, if you can be a musical prodigy or a mathematical prodigy, under the right kind of circumstances, why couldn’t you be any other kind of prodigy?"

- James Sikking. Playing the role of Doogie's doctor father was James Sikking, an actor with screen experience stretching all the way back to the mid-'50s.
Doogie Howser is a doctor. He is also a 16-year-old genius who graduated college at age 10 and finished medical school at age 14. But he is still a teenager, with normal teenage friends and problems.
