In this lesson, learners will practise the alphabet, the letter names and writing upper-case and lower-case letters through a song and various games. For extension, they will watch a story about animals for every letter of the alphabet and work as a class to produce an alphabet wall frieze or a picture dictionary.
- LETTER RECOGNITION: Do you wonder how to teach your child letter recognition the right way? The most effective and best way to teach a child how to recognize letters is the one that will stick with them.
- UPPER/LOWERCASE DIFFERENTIATION. Our goal is to help the child be able to know the lowercase and uppercase forms of a letter and also be able to match them together when there are different options.
- ALPHABET LETTER VISUAL DISCRIMINATION. Building this skill means the child can recognize the focus letter among other similar letters and also recognize the focus letter when it is presented in different fonts and sizes.
- FLUENCY. Once the child has learned to recognize the upper and lowercase letters, our next focus is to help them pick up pace in recognizing the focus letter among previously taught letters for future reading fluency.
Use a catchy and simple song to teach children the alphabet, promoting active listening, repetition, and participation to ensure students can confidently recall and pronounce the English alphabet. To prepare, select a simple, catchy, and suitable alphabet song for children.
- Singing alphabet songs. Did you know? The definition of the word alphabet per Oxford Languages is “a set of letters in a fixed order, used to represent the basic sounds of a language.”
- Symbols and songs. Once you’ve familiarized your learner with the alphabet song, you can take it to the next level by choosing to use the alphabet symbols in your learning process.
- Practice matching letters. Once you’ve got the alphabet song and order down with your student, it’s time to practice matching letters to their different forms (such as uppercase vs. lowercase, or “small letter” forms).
- Create flashcards. Flashcards can be useful for teaching a student phonemes (or the basic sounds of language, like phonics) and graphemes — or the individual letters that make up a language.
