White House life was a mixed blessing for the Lincoln family. Lincoln called his White House office the “shop,” a tacit acknowledgement of the fact that the president’s home was a public building, open to all citizens.
The only child of a first family to die while living in the White House, William Wallace Lincoln made tragic history. He was the cherished middle son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. By all accounts, Willie Lincoln shared many of the traits of his famous father.
William Wallace Lincoln (December 21, 1850 – February 20, 1862) was the third son of President Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. Willie was named after Mary's brother-in-law, Dr. William Smith Wallace. [1][2] He died of typhoid fever at the White House, during his father's presidency, age 11.
Oct 4, 2024 · The White House Historical Association has documented Willie's life and his time in the White House. Willie's bedroom in the White House has been preserved as a historical site. His poems and writings are often cited as examples of his intelligence and creativity.
His death was probably caused by the contaminated water that flowed through a nearby canal that provided water for the White House and a place for White House children to play. He was attended to by Dr. Robert K. Stone, the family physician.
Family played an important role in the Lincoln White House. Mr. Lincoln was devoted to his wife and three sons – a fourth son had died over a decade earlier. There was a large gap between Robert, who was 17 when his father entered the White House, and the much younger Willie (10) and Tad (7).
