Although the city has no official sister city relationship, Waukegan is home to about 6,000 people from Tonatico, Mexico, according to a February 2017 article in The Washington Post. This has created ongoing ties between the two cities.
When that lake shore spot became a city in the early 1800s, it at first was called “Little Fort” too. In 1849, the name was changed to “Waukegan,” based on the Algonquin tribe’s word for “trading post.”
Waukegan, Illinois was founded in 1829. It became a town in 1849 and became a city in 1859. Waukegan used to be a place were a lot of people wanted to be. In the 1920's its population was between 19,226 and 33,499. By 1970, the population jumped to 65,134.
Thomas Jenkins of Chicago constructed a two-story frame structure on Lake Michigan in 1835 (on the site of the old trading post), and by 1841 Little Fort was established as the county seat of Lake County. In March 1849 residents approved the name Waukegan, the Potawatomi equivalent to Little Fort.
