Dec 6, 2021 · Irma Thomas’ Rendition of ‘O Holy Night’ Is a Marvel From Beginning to End. Soulful Christmas music is an obsession for Bill Adler, so he interviewed the singer of one of his favorite songs.
- The author was not a Christian. According to the book Stories of Best Loved Christmas Songs the original text of O Holy Night was written in 1847 by a French poet named Placide Cappeau.
- The song was a favourite of abolitionists during the American Civil War. In 1855 American writer John Sullivan Dwight discovered the song and was inspired by the powerful lyrics about Christ's victory over the oppression of sin and the brotherhood of men under God.
- It was the first song ever broadcast live. Canadian inventor Reginald Fessenden was an early pioneer of radio broadcasting and claimed to have made the first ever transmission of voice and music.
- It is a modern favourite. Okay, so maybe you already knew that this song is pretty popular! Songfacts.com reports that O Holy Night beat Silent Night and Once in Royal David's City to be the most downloaded carol in the UK in 2009.
