William Erwin Eisner ( / ˈaɪznər /; March 6, 1917 – January 3, 2005) was an American cartoonist, writer, and entrepreneur. He was one of the earliest cartoonists to work in the American comic book industry, and his series The Spirit (1940–1952) was noted for its experiments in content and form.

Will Eisner was one of the pioneers of American comic books and graphic novels. As one half of the studio Eisner & Iger, he and Jerry Iger co-created and scripted many popular 1930s adventure comics, including 'Sheena, Queen of the Jungle' (1937) and 'Doll Man' (1939).

Released as Will Eisner's The Spirit Archives, the series also features introductions from eminent comic creators and critics. The archives are now complete and run for 26 volumes. It also features The Spirit daily newspaper strips and any Spirit material published since the initial 1940-1952 run.
