By rights this one shouldn't work. Directed by a couple of helmers whose background is in animation, starring a himbo who looks great but too often lacks charisma, and based on a 1980s TV series no one much remembers.
But somehow, against the odds, 21 Jump Street works on just about every level, largely thanks to a whip-smart script that revels in the ridiculousness of its own premise while at the same time subverting both the High School comedy and buddy cop drama.
Proceedings commence in the summer of 2005, when we meet Schmidt (Jonah Hill), a bullied and bleached blonde Slim Shady wannabe whose life is made a misery by High School bullies. And the worst offender is Jenko (Channing Tatum), a long-haired hunk whose sporting prowess makes up for a distinct lack of intelligence.
So leave your preconceptions at the door and enjoy 21 Jump Street for what it is - a smart and immensely entertaining comedy that announces the somewhat surprising arrival of a serious comic talent in the shape of Channing Tatum.
