Why England Slept (1940) is the published version of a thesis written by John F. Kennedy in his senior year at Harvard College. Its title is an allusion to Winston Churchill 's 1938 book While England Slept, which also examined the buildup of German power. [1]

This folder contains a typescript of John F. Kennedy's Why England Slept, the published version of his Harvard University senior thesis on the subject of British appeasement policy toward Nazi Germany.
Reviewed by Robert Gale Woolbert. The son of the recently resigned American Ambassador to England seeks to show that the responsibility for the policies which have led Britain to its present parlous state -- appeasement, pacifism, undue optimism and general muddleheadedness -- rests on the British people as a whole, not on any one class or group.
The Funk Book Company went on to publish the thesis as a book entitled, "Why England Slept". Much to everyone's surprise, the book achieved commercial success. Upon his return to the United States, Jack became actively involved on campus with those who worked to support the Allies.
