The fact that names can have this significance is most clearly seen in relation to God himself. In Scripture we repeatedly see reference to the 'name' of God. The Bible talks of worshipping or calling on the 'name of the LORD' and of not blaspheming the 'name' (e.g. Gen. 4:26; 21:33; Lev. 9:12; Ps. 9:10 etc.; see God for more detail).
