History. Buchtel High School opened in 1931 and is named after Akron industrialist and philanthropist John R. Buchtel, who helped to organize and finance a number of early Akron firms, including the Goodrich Corporation. Buchtel is best known for his role in the establishment of Buchtel College, which later became the University of Akron.
John R. Buchtel (1820–1892) was an American businessman and philanthropist. He founded Buchtel College, which became The University of Akron. Buchtel High School, a public high school in Akron, Ohio, is named in his honor. Buchtel was born on January 18, 1820, in Stark County, Ohio.

Both in Akron and in Buchtel, the legacy of John R. Buchtel outlived him. Buchtel College flourished until 1913 as a private institution when it became the University of Akron. In 1967, it gained the status of a state university.
