    • Production and Launch

The United Kingdom’s coinage underwent a significant review in 1994, leading to the introduction of a new £2 coin. This decision was influenced by the need for a higher denomination coin in general circulation.

The Need for a Distinctive Coin

A thorough consultation process was initiated, involving the vending machine industry, the general public, and special interest groups like the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB)] and Age Concern. The consensus favored a bi-color coin for its distinctiveness from other coins.

    Design Competition and Symbolism

To design the reverse of the coin, a public competition was held. Bruce Rushin, an art teacher from Norfolk, won with his innovative design. His concept featured concentric circles representing technological progress from the Iron Age to the Internet era.

    Selecting the Edge Inscription

Before finalizing the design, an appropriate edge inscription was needed. The chosen words, ‘If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants’, are from a 1676 letter by Isaac Newton to Robert Hooke. This inscription highlights the theme of cumulative scientific progress.

    Approval Process

The design, along with the inscription, received approval from the Chancellor of the Exchequer and subsequently from [Queen Elizabeth II](https://www.royal.uk/).

    Initial Production Challenges

Originally set for release in November 1997, the coin’s launch faced delays due to concerns from the vending industry. The initial batch featured the Raphael Maklouf portrait of the Queen.

The Launch of the £2 Coin

After resolving these issues, the £2 coin, now with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of the Queen, was officially launched on 15 June 1998. The £2 coin is legal tender for any amount.
