On 31 July 2012, Chelsea announced that De Bruyne was to join Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on a season-long loan deal. He scored his first goal for Bremen in a 3–2 defeat to Hannover 96 on 15 September, netting from 11 yards out after being played in by Eljero Elia .

In the 2009/10 season, he became an established first-team player and scored his first goal in February 2010. In the 2010/11 season, he won the Jupiler Pro League with Genk after scoring 5 goals and making 16 assists.
Chelsea moved for De Bruyne in January 2012, though he remained with Genk until the end of that season and spent the following campaign on loan at Werder Bremen. He impressed in the Bundesliga, scoring 10 goals in 34 starts before his return to Chelsea.
