Steely Dan is an American jazz rock group founded by Walter Becker (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, lead vocals). The band's first lineup also included guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, drummer Jim Hodder and singer David Palmer.
They formed a rock band initially named The Boys, but soon changed it to The Big Apple Band, and played numerous gigs around New York City. Despite interest in their demos, they never garnered a record contract.

This is the line-up the band retained until 2016. Fisher left and was replaced by Phil Thornalley for a year, before he too left and was replaced in turn by Solomon Walker. This lineup still continues to this day. In 2021, Pat Steward rejoined the band on the drums, while Mickey Curry is staying home with his family during the COVID-19 pandemic.

January 10, 1948, Passaic, New Jersey). Becker and Fagen met at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, in 1967.

Early in 1972, the original Steely Dan group - guitarist Denny Dias, guitarist Jeff Baxter, drummer Jim Hodder, and with Donald and Walter on keyboards and bass respectively - started rehearsing in an unfinished wing of the ABC building.
