The current championship series was begun by the British Chess Federation in 1904. The championship was not held in war years. It was also not held in 1919, 1922, 1927, and 1930 as major international events were then being held in England.
The stand-alone English Championship was re-established in 2022, with two further English Championships to date won by Mark Hebden in 2022 and Michael Adams in 2023. The tables below show English Champions from 2007 onwards. English Champions and winners of the Tony Miles Trophy.
The principal work of the Federation during this consolidation period was the holding of its Annual Congress which included the British and Ladies’ Championships and other events such as 1st, 2nd and 3rd class tournaments, lightning and problem solving competitions.
