Terminal Diagnosis. As an oncologist, Lawrence regularly had to inform numerous cancer patients about their impending, unavoidable death. One of these patients was the civil engineer John Kramer, whom Lawrence diagnosed with colon cancer and a frontal lobe tumor around the end of 1994.
Across the room is oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon, and between them is the corpse of an apparent suicide victim holding a revolver and a microcassette recorder. Both men find a tape in their pockets, and Adam retrieves the recorder.
After a brief fight, Adam gains the upper hand and bludgeons Zep to death with the toilet tank lid. Gordon, albeit severely injured, promises to get help and crawls out of the room. Once alone, Adam searches Zep's body for a key to his shackle but finds another audiotape instead.

While investigating a Jigsaw crime scene, Lawrence's penlight was found, by detectives David Tapp and Steven Sing. He was interrogated but his alibi cleared him; at the time of the death, Lawrence had been with Carla.
Initially, their trap scene would have included a shot of Gordon and John Kramer standing in the crowd, watching their game. The audio commentary also revealed that Hoffman died in the bathroom, probably due to starvation or death of thirst.
