If your BlackBerry isn't working, perform a hard, soft, or factory reset using these simple steps

Smartphones are great, at least when they work. When they don’t, they’re nothing more than expensive paperweights. If your BlackBerry is frozen or unresponsive, a quick reset may be just the ticket to get it up and running again. Follow this guide to restore your BlackBerry to its former glory.

To perform a hard reset, remove the battery for a few seconds and then reinsert.

For a soft reset, press and hold the Alt, Right-Shift, and Backspace/Delete keys.

Open the battery cover on the back of the BlackBerry.

Remove the battery from the phone.

You can perform a hard reset on the BlackBerry Z10 by pressing and holding the Power button on the top of the phone for about 10 seconds.

Reinsert the battery after a few seconds.

To be on the safe side, wait for up to 30 seconds and then reinsert the battery into the back of the phone.

The BlackBerry should reboot and function normally. You may have to power the BlackBerry back on with the Power button.

Press and hold the Alt key.

This method will reset your BlackBerry without having to remove the battery. You cannot perform this method if your BlackBerry does not have a keyboard.

Press and hold the Right Shift key.

Continue to hold the Alt key while you hold the Shift key.

Press and hold the Backspace/Delete key.

Make sure you are continuing to hold the Alt and Shift keys while you hold the Backspace/Delete key.

Open the Options on your home screen.

Performing a factory reset, or security wipe, will remove all of your personal information and reset the phone to the state it was in when it came out of the box.

In the Security Settings menu, select Security Wipe.

    Choose what you want erased.

Check the boxes for each of the items that you want wiped from the phone. If you want to completely erase your information, ensure that all of the boxes are checked.

To perform the wipe, you will need to enter the code. Type “blackberry” into the box and then select Wipe.

    • Remove the back cover from your BlackBerry handset and remove the battery.
    • Press and hold the "Power" key for 10 seconds.
    • Replace the battery and allow the BlackBerry to power on. This performs a hard reset, which should reset the screen. If the screen is still not responsive, contact your provider's technical support department for assistance with replacing the device.
    • Force Restart Your iPhone. Performing a force restart can fix many iPhone glitches. To do a force restart on an iPhone 8 or later, tap the volume up button, the volume down button, then hold the side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo.
    • Update iOS via Computer. Try updating your iPhone via your computer if the screen is black. If your phone is encountering a bug causing the screen to go black, an update may fix it.
    • Reattach Your iPhone's Display Connector. Use external pressure to try and reconnect the display connector. If you've dropped your phone recently and noticed that the screen is going black after the incident, the display connector on your device may have been loosened.
    • Monitor Your App Usage. Pay attention to what's going on when your phone screen goes black. If your phone always has display issues when using a particular app, try uninstalling that app to see if it makes a difference in your phone's screen going black randomly.
    • Check your battery. Your iPhone's screen can stay black if the battery is dead. This is the most common reason behind seeing a black screen and having an unresponsive phone.
    • Check for incompatible apps. An app can crash, leaving you with a black screen. Apps that aren't updated or optimized for iPhone can crash as soon as you open them, leaving an eerily similar black screen.
    • Force restart your iPhone. A temporary glitch can cause the screen to become unresponsive. To restart your iPhone 8 or later (including the newer SE gens), quickly press and release the volume up key and the volume down key, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
    • Update your iPhone in Recovery Mode. Connect your phone to a PC or Mac, then put it into Recovery Mode. With your phone connected to your computer and in Recovery Mode, you'll be able to update it or reset it.
