Lightning F.6 of No. 11 Squadron RAF arriving at RAF Greenham Common in 1976. The English Electric Lightning is a British fighter aircraft that served as an interceptor during the 1960s, the 1970s and into the late 1980s. It was capable of a top speed of above Mach 2. The Lightning was designed, developed, and manufactured by English Electric.
25 March 1964 – Lightning F2 XN823 being operated by Rolls-Royce was abandoned after it caught fire on a test flight near Keyham, Leicestershire. [5] 27 April 1964 – Lightning F2 XN785 of No. 92 Squadron RAF crashed landed five miles North of RAF Leconfield after running out of fuel. The pilot was killed.
First flown by J.W.C. Squier 29-5-59 at English Electric, Samlesbury. Used throughout flying life by EE/BAC and de Havilland for Firestreak and Red Top air-to-air missile trials. Crashed on final approach to Hatfield, whilst involved in the Red Top AAM programme, on 13-9-62.

English Electric Lightning. The Lightning was the first supersonic jet fighter in the Royal Air Force. The Lightning entered service in 1960. It could fly at twice the speed of sound (Mach 2) but it used so much fuel that its range was limited. This Lightning spent almost 15 years in RAF service, with Numbers 19 and 92 Squadrons.

The fact that the canopy of Lightning XS894 was closed when the aircraft was recovered had led to a large number of "conspiracy theories" that the pilot was "abducted by a UFO". The Lightning was on a positioning flight from Binbrook to Tees-Side Airport to participate in an air show the next day. The pilot was asked to perform a fly past at an RAF recruiting event near Scarborough, whilst en route.
