Orton, Harold (1898–1975), dialectologist, was born on 23 October 1898 in the village of Byers Green, co. Durham, younger son of the village schoolmaster, Thomas Orton (d. 1942), and his wife, Emily, née Blair.
Harold Orton (23 October 1898 – 7 March 1975) was a British dialectologist and professor of English Language and Medieval Literature at the University of Leeds.
Two professors, Harold Orton from the University of Leeds and Eugen Dieth from the University of Zurich, were discussing the wide range of dialects in England. These dialects, particularly in rural and remote parts of the country, give language scholars valuable clues about how English was spoken in the past – as far back as the Middle Ages.
