The school is a fully selective non-fee paying grammar school with admission via an entrance exam. Its previous status as a foundation school allowed for a degree of independence from the local education authority, until in 2011, under the government's education reforms, it attained Academy status.
From the outset it was obvious that the outlook of boys, masters and, above all, the Headmaster was fresh and adventurous. This was shown most obviously in the creation of a Scout Troop (the 3rd Altrincham) when the School was barely a year old and the whole scout movement in its infancy. Altrincham Grammar School for Boys is a selective academy. It has about 1,350 boys aged between 11 and 18. In September 2022 the school was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
