House of Strangers is a 1949 American black-and-white drama film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and starring Edward G. Robinson, Susan Hayward, and Richard Conte.
The studio remade House of Strangers as a western in 1954 as Broken Lance and Yordan was given credit for the story and won an Academy Award for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story. The character played by Edward G. Robinson is loosely based on Amadeo P. Giannini (1870-1949), founder of the Bank of Italy, which became the Bank of America.

Philip Yordan took a story about tough paternity and filial hatred and wrote a script that became House of Strangers with Edward G Robinson, Richard Conte and Luther Adler. Just a few years later, he re-fashioned it as a western, retitled Broken Lance .
House of Strangers ★★★½ 1949 Conte, in a superb performance, swears vengeance on his brothers, whom he blames for his father's death. Robinson, in a smaller part than you'd expect from his billing, is nevertheless excellent as the ruthless banker father who sadly reaps a reward he didn't count on.
