His last two albums, Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow, had broken new ground in terms of both folk rock and psychedelia, and each album’s respective title track had been a Top 10 hit in both the UK and US, with ‘Sunshine Superman’ topping the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1966.
