    • Face/Off. As if there could be any other choice for number one. I won't claim that "Face/Off" is John Woo's best film, but it's definitely one of the best — a symphony of silliness dressed up in a glossy '90s package.
    • Hard Target. "Hard Target" is the film that brought Woo to Hollywood, and it was an arrival chock full of problems. For one thing, the filmmaker had to cut down some of the violence to score an R rating over an NC-17.
    • Mission: Impossible 2. "Mission: Impossible 2" is often derided as the worst "Mission: Impossible" movie, but I'm here to tell you it's better than its reputation suggests.
    • Broken Arrow. Does anyone remember "Broken Arrow"? They should, because John Woo's 1996 flick is a hell of a lot of fun. John Travolta gets to ham it up big time as a United States Air Force pilot gone rogue.
  1. Aug 16, 2002 · Action director John Woo talks about getting serious with ultra-violent war movie, "Windtalkers".

  2. Dec 1, 2023 · After thrilling audiences with box-office hits like Broken Arrow, Face/Off and Mission: Impossible 2, Woo brings us his biggest action canvas to date with MGM’s Windtalkers, a fact-based World War II drama starring Nicolas Cage.

  3. The war action here is unparalleled, absolutely brutal and dynamic, constantly in motion, light years beyond even Spielberg's iconic stuff, because almost no other filmmaker understands the intrinsic beauty of violence as well as John Woo.

  4. After having seen both versions, my main disappointment is still that the two code talkers seem like background characters. A movie with a lower budget, without big Hollywood stars put in the foreground would probably have been more satisfying. Maybe that movie should have been done by another director too, I don't know.

  5. Jun 14, 2002 · WINDTALKERS is a beautifully filmed, high-budget war movie with an all-star cast, masterfully directed by John Woo. During World War II, history reveals that the U.S. turned to the Navajo Indians and their unusual language to help secure secret communications in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

  7. Jan 31, 2011 · At the least, Windtalkers should establish John Woo as someone who can do more than just action movies (which he apparently doesn’t want to do anymore anyway). Don’t let my pissing and moaning sway you too much; it’s a decent flick.
