Despite it stagnating somewhat around the time of the Oliver arc, the pilot and finale bookended the overall story perfectly, especially with the parallel scenes of Ryan seeing Marissa in his rearview mirror as a luxury car arrives to pick her up. It would also have been a far more realistic depiction of the difficulties of escaping the status quo.
