Stuyvesant High was established as an all-boys school in the East Village of lower Manhattan in 1904. An entrance examination was mandated three decades later for all S.H.S. applicants starting in 1934, and after 65 years with an all-male student body, the high school started accepting female students in 1969.
Though Peter Stuyvesant’s legacy does not reflect Stuyvesant High School’s values today, the name “Stuyvesant” has become a focal part of the school’s identity in the decades since its founding in 1904 and is now often associated with prestige and academia.
