New Mexico State University (NMSU or NM State) is a public land-grant research university in Las Cruces, New Mexico, United States. Founded in 1888, it is the state's oldest public institution of higher education, and the state's first land-grant institution in New Mexico.
NMSU was founded in 1888 as Las Cruces College. The Territorial Legislature of 1889 established the land-grant Agricultural College and Experiment Station, which officially opened on January 21, 1890.
The designation as New Mexico’s land-grant university under the Morrill Act has shaped NMSU since the late 1880s. NMSU has been dedicated to New Mexico’s diverse population for more than a century, transforming lives through three main pursuits: teaching, research and public service.
