Camberwell (/ ˈkæmbərwɛl / KAM-bər-wel) is an area of South London, England, in the London Borough of Southwark, 23⁄4 miles (4.5 kilometres) southeast of Charing Cross. Camberwell was first a village associated with the church of St Giles and a common of which Goose Green is a remnant.

1748 Camberwell Hall opened on Grove Lane as the assembly room for the Camberwell Tea Gardens, which included extensive gardens. Became a popular venue for balls and concerts for the middle classes. 1769 Blackfriars bridge opened. It linked Camberwell to the City and led to much new building.
