Jul 7, 2006 · I don't think breadboard ends were ever intended to prevent the cupping of the top. Their purpose is to cover up end grain. Exposed end grain can lead to excessive shrinkage at the ends and thus cracks. Springing the joints between the top boards helps reduce or prevent this.
Jul 21, 2015 · As you probably know, when you make the joint, you want to keep the width-wise expansion of the top in mind so that the breadboard ends don't crack the top. This usually means you positively-attach the breadboards in the middle (with glue or fasteners) and allow the ends to float.
