Despite Rossellini later claiming that it played to a small audience and “went quite unnoticed”, it was awarded the ‘Grand Prix du Festival International du Film’ (later renamed as the Palme d’Or).

Set in Rome in 1944, the film follows a diverse group of characters coping under the Nazi occupation, and centers on a Resistance fighter trying to escape the city with the help of a Catholic priest. The title refers to the status of Rome as an open city following its declaration as such on 14 August 1943.
Neorealism became famous globally in 1946 with Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City, when it won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival as the first major film produced in Italy after the war.
Shot both on the ravaged streets of the city and in the studio, Rome, Open City has inspired and influenced countless filmmakers.
