  5. Alfonso III. was the first son of the Duke Cesare I. d'Este of Modena and Reggio and his wife Virginia de' Medici and was born on 22nd October 1591. Not only did he bear a close resemblance to his mother (compare their eyes!), but he was also very close to her.
