Feb 17, 2017 · In 1822 Fenwick was consecrated the first Bishop of Cincinnati. At the corner of Seventh and Sycamore Streets, Fenwick in 1826 built St. Peter Cathedral, in 1829 St. Francis Xavier Seminary, and in 1831 the College of the Athenaeum (which became St. Xavier High School and Xavier University).

Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P. (August 19, 1768 – September 26, 1832) was an American prelate of the Catholic Church, a Dominican friar and the first Bishop of Cincinnati .
The first Xavier basketball game on record was February 20, 1920 at the Fenwick Club in Cincinnati. Coached by Joe Meyer , the Musketeers compiled a 94–52 record during Meyer's's 13-year run as head coach from 1920 to 1933.
By 1839, it was clear to Fenwick’s successor, Bishop John Baptist Purcell, that the new College was facing serious problems which required immediate attention if the school was to survive. The main issue was staffing and faculty.
