Toshiro Mifune (三船 敏郎, Mifune Toshirō, April 1, 1920 – December 24, 1997) was a Japanese actor and producer. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades over a lengthy career, [1] [2] he is widely considered one of the greatest actors of all time.
Mifune’s Musashi is an update of this well-known figure that could provide viewers with a model for heroic identification at a time when, after war and defeat, the Japanese were coming to terms with shame and guilt and expressing anxieties about the future.

It marked the silver screen debut of the man who is widely regarded as the finest actor in Japanese cinematic history: the great Toshiro Mifune. The screenplay for the movie was written by Akira Kurosawa.
The film narrates the story of Kuwabatake Sanjūrō, a rōnin (masterless samurai) in 19th-century Japan who drifts into a rural town divided between two competing crime gangs. The iconography of Mifune’s character, clad in a baggy black kimono and exuding manly arrogance, came to exemplify the epitome of samurai action.
