Chapter 1 Summary: “Monday, June 25, 1781” Isabel, the narrator, and Curzon are two teenagers on the run during the Revolutionary War. They’re hiding in the bushes, waiting for British soldiers to move on so they can get a look at a nearby milestone.
Gatsby and Wilson are otherwise friendless men. At the end of this chapter, their separate lives converge, and both men die. Note that in Chapter 1 Nick writes of the ‘foul dust’ that floated in the wake of Gatsby’s dreams (p. 8).

They have sex, and Angela becomes pregnant—as a result, Angela’s strict Catholic family forces Malachy to marry Angela. Their child, Frank McCourt, is the narrator of the book.
