  1. Jul 5, 2024 · Conrad Martin Metz (German, 1749-1827) The death of Florine of Burgundy signed and dated 'C. Metz/1813' l.r., pen and ink, bodycolour and wash 56 x 70cm. Condition Report. Overall: 77 x 89.5cm Light foxing. The work has slipped slightly in the frame and there is a horizontal line of staining to the extreme top edge. Not viewed out of glazed frame.

  2. Engraver and painter, b. Bonn, son of the painter Johann Metz; Bartolozzi pupil in London by 1781. Exh. RA 1781-94, and SA 1783. Major publication the 'Imitations of Ancient and Modern Drawings' (1st ed 1789, 2nd ed with text 1798). Moved to Rome in 1801 where remained to death on 16 December 1827.

  3. Metz lived in Rome from 1801 until his death in 1827. This highly-worked presentation drawing treats the slaughter of Niobe’s seven sons and seven daughters by Apollo and Diana, a subject from Ovid (Metamorphoses VI, 204-312), and contains quotations from numerous classical sculptures.

  4. Since 1999 the record price for this artist at auction is 20,400 USD for HIPPOLYTUS DRAGGED TO HIS DEATH ON THE SEA-SHORE, WITH NEPTUNE LOOKING ON, RIDING A SEA-BULL, sold at Sotheby's New York in 2006. The artist died in 1827.

  6. The engraver, draughtsman and painter Conrad Martin Metz was born in Bonn between 1745 and 1749. He studied in London at the Royal Academy Schools and with the engraver (and founder Academician) Francesco Bartolozzi.

  7. The British Museum catalogue entry for the engravings notes that Metz's Last Judgement 'will have played an important role in disseminating the fame of Michelangelo's fresco. Metz reproduces the Last Judgement as it was then known, with the loin cloths added not long after Michelangelo's death'.
