- Inherit the Wind (1960) Inherit the Wind is a 1960 courtroom drama starring Spencer Tracy and Fredric March. Adapted from the 1955 play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee, Inherit the Wind is based on the infamous 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial, in which a high school teacher was accused of violating Tennessee’s Butler Act, which had made it illegal for teachers to teach human evolution in any state-funded school.
